Convert ZIP Files on Mac

ZIP is an archive format using the .zip extension. Consul converts ZIP files to 3 other formats, and 4 formats to ZIP. Rename a file's extension in Finder and Consul handles the conversion automatically.

What is ZIP?

ZIP is the most widely used archive format, bundling one or more files into a single container with lossless DEFLATE compression. Created by Phil Katz for PKZIP in 1989, it's supported natively on virtually every operating system and is the default way people share collections of files.

ZIP uses lossless compression, so files shrink without losing any information and decode back to the original data exactly.

ZIP was developed by PKWARE and is an open standard.

Opening ZIP files on a Mac

Quick Look previews ZIP files. Select one in Finder and press Space.

Double-clicking a ZIP expands it with the built-in Archive Utility rather than opening it for browsing.
