Convert 3DS Files on Mac
3DS (Autodesk 3D Studio) is a 3D model format using the .3ds extension. Consul converts 3DS files to 5 other formats. Rename a file's extension in Finder and Consul handles the conversion automatically.
What is 3DS?
3DS is the binary model format of Autodesk's original 3D Studio, the DOS modeling and animation program introduced in 1990. It uses a chunk-based structure to store meshes, materials, cameras and lights, and although long superseded by newer Autodesk formats it remains a widely supported interchange format for simple 3D models.
3DS files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats.
3DS was developed by Autodesk.
Opening 3DS files on a Mac
macOS has no built-in way to open 3DS files. Consul converts them to a format your Mac can open.
macOS does not recognize the 3DS type and has no built-in app or Quick Look preview for it; a dedicated 3D application is needed to open one.
