What is DAE?

DAE is the file extension for COLLADA (Collaborative Design Activity), an XML-based open 3D interchange format originally created by Sony Computer Entertainment and now managed by the Khronos Group. It stores geometry, materials, textures, animation and full scene data for exchange between 3D applications. On the Mac it's notable as one of the few 3D formats Apple's Preview app opens directly.

DAE files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats.

DAE was developed by the Khronos Group and is an open standard.

Opening DAE files on a Mac

Preview opens DAE files.

Preview opens Collada (.dae) files and shows an interactive 3D view you can rotate, and can export a 2D image or a QuickTime movie of an animation. A .dae is often accompanied by a companion 'models' folder that must stay alongside it.
