What is ASS?
ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is a subtitle format introduced in 2002 as an extension of SubStation Alpha. Beyond plain dialogue it supports styled text, precise positioning, custom fonts, colors, karaoke timing and layered effects, which is why it's the standard for anime fansubs and on-screen sign typesetting. Aegisub is the best-known editor.
ASS files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats.
Opening ASS files on a Mac
ASS files are plain UTF-8 text, but macOS assigns no default app to the .ass extension and Quick Look won't preview it as text; you can still open one in TextEdit or a subtitle editor like Aegisub.
Consul supports 23 conversions for ASS
Consul is the easiest way to convert ASS files on your Mac, or to turn other files into ASS. Rename file.ass to change its extension, and Consul converts it automatically.
