Convert WebM Files on Mac

WebM (Google WebM Video) is a video format using the .webm extension. Consul converts WebM files to 24 other formats, and 53 formats to WebM. Rename a file's extension in Finder and Consul handles the conversion automatically.

What is WebM?

WebM is a royalty-free video container Google introduced in 2010, built for the web. It holds VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio, and it is the standard output of browser-based screen recorders, which is why WebM files so often land in the Downloads folder.

WebM uses lossy compression: encoders permanently discard some detail to keep files small. Converting to a lossless format later preserves the file exactly as it is now, but that discarded detail doesn't come back.

WebM was developed by Google and is an open standard.

Opening WebM files on a Mac

macOS has no built-in way to open WebM files. Consul converts them to a format your Mac can open.

Safari can play WebM videos embedded in web pages, but QuickTime Player and Quick Look cannot open WebM files from Finder.

Consul supports 77 conversions for WebM

Consul is the easiest way to convert WebM files on your Mac, or to turn other files into WebM. Rename file.webm to change its extension, and Consul converts it automatically.
