What is TS?

TS (MPEG Transport Stream) is a container designed for broadcasting and streaming, where holding up over a lossy channel matters. It's used for digital TV, DVR recordings and as the segment format for HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). A .ts file usually carries H.264 or MPEG-2 video and is defined in the MPEG-2 Systems standard.

TS uses lossy compression: encoders permanently discard some detail to keep files small. Converting to a lossless format later preserves the file exactly as it is now, but that discarded detail doesn't come back.

TS was developed by MPEG (ISO/IEC).

Opening TS files on a Mac

macOS recognizes .ts as a transport-stream movie type, so QuickTime Player can play some files (typically H.264 with AAC audio) but fails on others, especially MPEG-2 streams; VLC is the reliable fallback.
