What is SVG?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector image format maintained by the W3C. Instead of a grid of pixels, it describes shapes and paths mathematically, so images stay perfectly sharp at any size. It is widely used for logos, icons, and illustrations on the web, and because it is plain text it can even be edited by hand.

SVG files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats. The format supports both transparency and animation. Files can carry XML metadata.

SVG was developed by W3C and is an open standard.
