What is HTML?

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the markup language of the web, describing the structure and content of a page with tags. Created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1991 and maintained today by the WHATWG, it's a plain-text format that every web browser can render.

HTML files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats.

HTML was developed by WHATWG and is an open standard.
