Convert MPEG Files on Mac

MPEG is a video format using the .mpeg and .mpg extensions. Consul converts MPEG files to 25 other formats. Rename a file's extension in Finder and Consul handles the conversion automatically.

What is MPEG?

MPEG files (.mpg or .mpeg) typically hold an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program stream, the video standards published by the Moving Picture Experts Group in the 1990s. MPEG-1 powered Video CDs and early web video, while MPEG-2 became the basis for DVDs and digital television. The files carry lossy compressed video with audio.

MPEG uses lossy compression: encoders permanently discard some detail to keep files small. Converting to a lossless format later preserves the file exactly as it is now, but that discarded detail doesn't come back.

MPEG was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (ISO/IEC).
