What is WMA?
WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a family of proprietary audio codecs Microsoft introduced in 1999 to compete with MP3, stored in the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container. It ranges from lossy WMA and WMA Pro to WMA Lossless, and was common on Windows PCs and older Windows Media-based devices and online stores.
WMA supports both lossy and lossless compression, so file size and fidelity depend on how each file was encoded. Files can carry ASF / WM tags.
WMA was developed by Microsoft.
Opening WMA files on a Mac
macOS has no built-in way to open WMA files. Consul converts them to a format your Mac can open.
macOS recognizes the file type but has no built-in app or codec to play WMA. QuickTime Player, the Music app, and Quick Look all can't open it, so you need VLC or a conversion.
Consul supports 12 conversions for WMA
Consul is the easiest way to convert WMA files on your Mac, or to turn other files into WMA. Rename file.wma to change its extension, and Consul converts it automatically.
