What is WAV?

WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is the standard uncompressed audio format on Windows, developed by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 as part of the RIFF container family. It stores raw PCM samples for perfect fidelity at the cost of large files, which makes it a common choice for recording, editing, and CD-quality masters.

WAV files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats. Files can carry RIFF INFO / BWF metadata.

WAV was developed by Microsoft & IBM.
