What is WMV?
WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's video format, introduced in the early 2000s and wrapped in the ASF container. It was widely used for video on Windows and for early web streaming. Because it relies on Microsoft's own video codecs, WMV files often won't play on a Mac without extra software.
WMV uses lossy compression: encoders permanently discard some detail to keep files small. Converting to a lossless format later preserves the file exactly as it is now, but that discarded detail doesn't come back.
WMV was developed by Microsoft.
Opening WMV files on a Mac
macOS recognizes WMV as a movie type, but QuickTime Player can't decode Windows Media video; playing WMV has always required third-party software such as the former Flip4Mac plug-in or VLC.
