What is WebVTT?
WebVTT (Web Video Text Tracks, .vtt) is the W3C standard subtitle format for HTML5 video. It builds on SubRip's timecode style but adds positioning, basic styling and metadata, and uses a period rather than a comma before milliseconds. It's the format web browsers use for captions and one of the formats YouTube accepts.
WebVTT files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats.
WebVTT was developed by W3C and is an open standard.
