What is SSA?
SSA (SubStation Alpha) is a styled subtitle format created in 1996 by CS Low (known as Kotus) for the SubStation Alpha program used by anime fansubbers. It introduced custom fonts, colors and positioning to subtitles. SSA was largely superseded in 2002 by its successor, Advanced SubStation Alpha (ASS).
SSA files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats.
SSA was developed by CS Low (Kotus).
Opening SSA files on a Mac
SSA files are plain UTF-8 text, but macOS assigns no default app to the .ssa extension and Quick Look won't preview it as text; you can still open one in TextEdit or a subtitle editor.
Consul supports 23 conversions for SSA
Consul is the easiest way to convert SSA files on your Mac, or to turn other files into SSA. Rename file.ssa to change its extension, and Consul converts it automatically.
