What is FLV?

FLV (Flash Video) is the container Macromedia, later Adobe, created to deliver video through the Flash Player. Through the late 2000s it was the dominant format for web video, including early YouTube. Adobe ended support for Flash in December 2020, so FLV is now a legacy format found mainly in old downloads and archives.

FLV uses lossy compression: encoders permanently discard some detail to keep files small. Converting to a lossless format later preserves the file exactly as it is now, but that discarded detail doesn't come back.

FLV was developed by Adobe (originally Macromedia).

Opening FLV files on a Mac

QuickTime Player and Quick Look can't play Flash Video; opening FLV files on a Mac has always needed a third-party player such as VLC.
