What is MicroDVD?
MicroDVD is an early subtitle format that uses the .sub extension. Instead of timecodes it marks each line with start and end frame numbers, written as {start}{end}text, so playback timing depends on the video's exact frame rate. Named after the MicroDVD Player released around 2000, it's now largely legacy, seen alongside old DivX and AVI files.
MicroDVD files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats.
MicroDVD was developed by Tiamat Software.
Opening MicroDVD files on a Mac
MicroDVD files are plain text using the .sub extension, but macOS assigns no default app or Quick Look preview to them; you can still open one in TextEdit or any text editor.
