What is 3GP?

3GP is a multimedia container defined by the 3GPP standards body around 2003 for 3G mobile phones. Based on the MP4 file format, it stores highly compressed H.263, MPEG-4 or H.264 video with AMR or AAC audio to keep files small over cellular networks. It was the standard format for MMS video messages and early camera phones.

3GP was developed by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project).
