What is PNG?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster format created in the mid-1990s as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It supports full alpha transparency and exact, sharp colors, which makes it the standard choice for logos, screenshots, icons, and any web graphic that needs crisp edges rather than the soft artifacts of JPEG.

PNG uses lossless compression, so files shrink without losing any information and decode back to the original data exactly. It supports transparency. Files can carry XMP/tEXt metadata.

PNG was developed by the PNG Development Group and is an open standard.
