Convert CR2 Files on Mac
CR2 (Canon Raw Image) is an image format using the .cr2 extension. Consul converts CR2 files to 29 other formats. Rename a file's extension in Finder and Consul handles the conversion automatically.
What is CR2?
CR2 is Canon's raw image format, used by EOS cameras from 2004 until it was replaced by CR3 in 2018. A CR2 file holds the unprocessed sensor data plus an embedded JPEG preview, giving photographers full latitude in post-processing at the cost of large files.
CR2 uses lossless compression, so files shrink without losing any information and decode back to the original data exactly. Files can carry EXIF/MakerNote metadata.
CR2 was developed by Canon.
Opening CR2 files on a Mac
Quick Look previews CR2 files. Select one in Finder and press Space. Preview opens CR2 files. For a one-off conversion, Preview can also export CR2 to JPEG, PNG, TIFF and PDF.
macOS decodes raw photos through its camera-specific raw engine, so images from very new camera models may not display until Apple ships support in a macOS update.
