What is BMP?

BMP (bitmap) is Microsoft's original raster image format, introduced with early versions of Windows. It stores pixels with little or no compression, producing large but very simple files. Once common on Windows, it has largely been superseded by PNG and JPEG but still turns up in older software and Windows system resources.

BMP files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats. The format does not support transparency.

BMP was developed by Microsoft.
