What is CSV?

CSV (Comma-Separated Values) is a plain-text format that stores tabular data with one record per line and fields separated by commas. It's the universal lowest-common-denominator for moving spreadsheet and database data between programs, and its conventions are described in RFC 4180.

CSV files are stored uncompressed. Nothing is lost to encoding, though they can take more disk space than compressed formats.
