What is AVIF?

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec, published by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It compresses noticeably better than JPEG and WebP at comparable quality and supports HDR, wide color gamut, transparency and animation. Browsers adopted it quickly, so AVIF files increasingly show up in downloads.

AVIF supports both lossy and lossless compression, so file size and fidelity depend on how each file was encoded. It supports both transparency and animation. Files can carry EXIF/XMP metadata.

AVIF was developed by the Alliance for Open Media and is an open standard.
