What is PSD?
PSD (Photoshop Document) is Adobe Photoshop's native file format. It preserves layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, and other fully editable data, which makes it the working format for professional image editing. Because it keeps all of that editable structure, a PSD is typically much larger than a flattened JPEG or PNG export.
PSD uses lossless compression, so files shrink without losing any information and decode back to the original data exactly. It supports transparency. Files can carry EXIF/XMP metadata.
PSD was developed by Adobe.
Opening PSD files on a Mac
Quick Look previews PSD files. Select one in Finder and press Space. Preview opens PSD files. For a one-off conversion, Preview can also export PSD to JPEG, PNG, TIFF and PDF.
Preview and Quick Look show a flattened composite; Photoshop's individual layers, masks, and editable text are not preserved.
