What is JXL?
JPEG XL is a modern image format from the Joint Photographic Experts Group, standardized as ISO/IEC 18181 in 2022. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, and high bit depths, and compresses noticeably better than the original JPEG at the same quality. It can also repackage an existing JPEG losslessly at roughly 20% smaller, which is why it is positioned as a long-term successor to JPEG.
JXL supports both lossy and lossless compression, so file size and fidelity depend on how each file was encoded. It supports both transparency and animation. Files can carry EXIF/XMP metadata.
JXL was developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and is an open standard.
