Convert AI Files on Mac

AI (Adobe Illustrator Document) is an image format using the .ai extension. Consul converts AI files to 51 other formats. Rename a file's extension in Finder and Consul handles the conversion automatically.

What is AI?

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native format for vector artwork — logos, icons, and illustrations. Modern AI files (Illustrator 9 and later, saved with "Create PDF Compatible File") are actually valid PDFs with Adobe's private editing data attached, which is why many apps can place them but almost nothing on a Mac can open them without Illustrator.

AI was developed by Adobe.

Opening AI files on a Mac

Quick Look cannot preview AI files. Preview cannot open AI files.

macOS has no built-in viewer for Illustrator files — Quick Look shows no preview and Preview does not open them.

Consul supports 51 conversions for AI

Consul is the easiest way to convert AI files on your Mac, or to turn other files into AI. Rename file.ai to change its extension, and Consul converts it automatically.
