What is Opus?

Opus is a highly efficient, royalty-free lossy audio codec standardized by the IETF in 2012 (RFC 6716) and developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation with Skype and others. It spans low-bitrate speech to high-quality music and is the default audio codec for WebRTC, Discord, and many messaging apps. Standalone Opus files use the .opus (Ogg) extension.

Opus uses lossy compression: encoders permanently discard some detail to keep files small. Converting to a lossless format later preserves the file exactly as it is now, but that discarded detail doesn't come back. Files can carry Vorbis comments.

Opus was developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation / IETF and is an open standard.

Opening Opus files on a Mac

The Music app can't import Opus and QuickTime Player can't open .opus files; macOS plays Opus natively only when it is wrapped in a CAF or MP4 container (since macOS High Sierra). afconvert can read .opus files from Terminal, e.g. to convert them to AAC.

Consul is the easiest way to convert Opus files on your Mac, or to turn other files into Opus. Rename file.opus to change its extension, and Consul converts it automatically.
